Tour Overview

Lesotho, also referred to as “The Kingdom in the Sky”, is one of the ultimate eco-destinations. The two main attractions of this country are the majestic mountain vistas and the culture of the friendly Basotho people who inhabit this area.

During the winter months the magnificent Maloti and Drakensberg mountain ranges are capped with snow. The natural surroundings of Lesotho are breath-taking – plummeting waterfalls, lush greens and more than half a year’s sunshine. This Kingdom in the southern corner of Africa is the perfect getaway destination.

The Basotho people who inhabit this country are extremely friendly and would love to share their rich culture with the rest of the world. Whilst pony-trekking through the lands, make sure to stop at one of the villages and immerse yourself into the Basotho culture

The Maletsunyane Braai Festival is a multi-genre music festival held on the banks of the Maletsunyane River(Lesotho). With the break taking views of the Maletsunyane Falls on the Maloti Mountains, it could easily be termed as the “most scenic and highest festival” in Southern Africa- @ at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level. The charming town Semokong plays host to music-lovers and artists both from Lesotho and from across the continent.

Adventure Itinerary

Day 1: Friday

Our adventure begins when we depart Johannesburg and we head towards the Maseru Bridge Border Post. Upon completion of all cross border and immigration procedures the adventure takes us Malealea Lodge. The road to Malealea is quite scenic – characterised by breath-taking rolling mountains and valleys.

The Malealea Lodge is nestled in the Makhomalong Valley and surrounded by the beautiful Maloti Mountains. You will see vast and endless rolling hills, aloe plants as tall as you are growing out of the dry ground, and the russet glow that shines over the mountains as the sun slips behind them.

Time and weather permitting, there will be plenty of activities to indulge including pony rides and local music.  You will also get to enjoy a warm shower, and dinner while you relax and reflect on your adventure in this beautiful country before retiring into your comfortable lodge bed.

Day 2 : Saturday

After a hearty breakfast and some taking in of the local culture and activities, we head to Semonkong- the venue for the Maletsunyane Braai Festival. The Maletsunyane Braai Festival is a multi-genre music festival held on the banks of the Maletsunyane River . With the break taking views of the Maletsunyane Falls, it could easily be termed as the “most scenic and highest festival” in Southern Africa-at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level. The charming town Semokong plays host to artists and music-lovers from Southern Africa.

The highlight for the day will including enjoying the braai and the festival later in the evening.

We will spend the night at the main campsite of the festival.

Day 3 : Sunday

With the night’s festivities still fresh in our minds ,it’s time to head to back to Johannesburg. After our last breakfast together, we head towards Maseru Bridge Border post, our exit from Lesotho, and entry into South Africa. When we arrive in Johannesburg we say goodbye to our new friends and everyone goes their own way.

What to expect on an Overland Expedition?

An Overland Expedition is probably the most authentic way to travel through the vast distances of this awesome continent and really feel it’s heart.

It’s usually the most affordable way to travel and due to the semi-participatory nature of the tour also a great way to make life-long friends. You can choose how involved you want to get, but you find a lot to talk about while helping prepare meals. You will also be taught to put up your own comfortable 2-man tent with your travel buddy – but you should be very good at it by the end of your overland adventure. The tents and sleeping mattresses will be provided, just remember to bring your sleeping bag and pillow. Some of the campsites on an African overland tour may be in extremely unique locations and you may even get an opportunity to bush camp.

Our Overland Expeditions offer a choice of camping or lodge accommodation and there are also lots of opportunities en-route to participate in adventure activities, safaris and make great new friends.

Overland tours are typically done in customised Overland Trucks which are specially designed for comfort and excellent viewing of game and the stunning landscapes you will come across while on the road.
